Kyle Busch came up five spots short in his bid to make NASCAR history Saturday night, and Johnny Benson took advantage, holding off Michael Annett to win the Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

Busch was attempting to become the first driver to win in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series and Craftsman Truck Series in successive starts. He won the Nationwide Series' Dollar General 300 on July 11 and the Sprint Cup's Lifelock.com 400 the next night.

The early portion of the race featured a number of yellow flags, and nine of the first 24 laps were run under caution. There were eight cautions overall for 36 laps.

Benson grabbed the lead in the truck series points race by one over third-place finisher Matt Crafton. Previous points leader Ron Hornaday finished 10th and dropped to third.

NASCAR Nationwide: NASCAR Sprint Cup star Carl Edwards passed Jason Leffler with 48 laps remaining and cruised to victory at the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 in Madison, Ill.

Edwards' second win at Gateway International Raceway in three years came in front of a nearly hometown crowd. Edwards grew up in Columbia, Mo., about a 2-hour drive from the track.

Joey Logan, 18, in just his fifth race, finished second.

Moto GP U.S. Grand Prix: Defending world champion Casey Stoner won his fifth straight pole in qualifying for the United States Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna

The Australian, who has won his last three races on the world's premier motorcycle racing series, Moto GP, broke his own lap record with a time of 1 minutes, 21.700 seconds at 100.07 mph on the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course. If Stoner continues his winning streak from the pole and sets the fastest lap of today's race, he'll be the first rider in 35 years to win four straight events while setting the fastest laps.

Valentino Rossi will start next to Stoner, the Italian star looking for his first win at the track. Despite seven world championships, Rossi has never won at Laguna Seca. Rossi's former teammate, Kentuckian Nicky Hayden, will start on the outside of row one.

IndyCar: Penske Racing's Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe took the top two spots in qualifying for today's Honda Indy 200 at Lexington's Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

But series points leader Scott Dixon still appears to be charge in the race for the championship with six races to go, although he will start sixth on the 13-turn, 2.258-mile road course. Dixon holds a 63-point lead over Castroneves and 69 over teammate Dan Wheldon.

Formula One: McLaren's Lewis Hamilton edged Felipe Massa on the final lap to take the pole position for today's German Grand Prix in Hockenheim.
