The SaberCats will be without top receiver James Roe when they play for the Arena Football League title July 27 in New Orleans.

Roe, the franchise's career leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions will miss the game against the Philadelphia Soul because of a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Roe, 34, suffered the injury two weeks during the SaberCats' playoff victory over Colorado.

"It's tough, because these are guys I've been going to war with all year," Roe said.

Track and field

Coach Trevor Graham received a lifetime ban from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for his role in helping his athletes obtain performance-enhancing drugs. Graham has been banned from participating in any event sanctioned by the U.S. Olympic Committee, the IAAF, USA Track and Field or any other group that participates in the World Anti-Doping Agency program. He was convicted in San Francisco in May of lying to federal investigators in the BALCO case. He's still awaiting sentencing.

Jovan Kirovski had a goal and two assists, leading the MLS Earthquakes to their first win in more than a month, a 4-0 exhibition decision over the Honduras Olympic team in Santa Clara.

  • Former Real Madrid coach Vicente del Bosque was hired to become the national coach of Spain, the team Luis Aragones led to the European Championship title last month. Aragones stepped down to lead the Turkish club Fenerbahce the next two seasons.

    Colleges

    Seattle prep basketball star Reggie Moore is seeking a release from his letter of intent to attend Fresno State. Moore, a point guard who helped Rainier Beach High School to the 3A state title this past season, said he felt pressured to sign with Fresno State in November. He mentioned Cal might be a good option. He said Cal recruited him before his senior season but did not offer him a scholarship.

  • Arizona State reinstated its men's swimming program, two months after the school said it was dropping the sport to cut costs in the athletic department. Athletic director Lisa Love said the school received financial support from various donors.

    NHL

    The Sharks signed defenseman Brendan Buckley to a one-year contract. In 2007-08, he played in 43 games for Iserlohn of the DEL in Germany, posting four assists and 119 penalty minutes. San Jose also signed center Cory Larose to a one-year deal. He played in 47 games for Lulea HF of the Swedish Elite League last season, amassing 10 goals, 18 assists and 83 penalty minutes.

  • Forward Dallas Drake of the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings has retired after 16 seasons in the NHL. Drake, 39, said "the wear and tear on my body" has become impossible to ignore.

  • A Michigan bank is suing veteran Sergei Fedorov, saying payments have stopped on more than $2 million in loans.

  • Phoenix center Martin Hanzal is scheduled to have back surgery Thursday for a herniated disk.

    Basketball

    Slovenia, Germany, Puerto Rico and Brazil reached the quarterfinals of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Athens, Greece. Dirk Nowitzki had 16 points to lead Germany to a 104-68 win over Cape Verde.

    WNBA

    Sophia Young scored 26 points, leading visiting San Antonio (16-7) to an 97-87 win over Phoenix (9-12).

  • Lisa Willis scored 18 points as visiting New York (11-9) posted a 77-71 win over Connecticut (13-9).

    Mixed martial arts

    Former light-heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was arrested in Costa Mesa after a series of collisions allegedly involving the pickup truck he was driving. There were no injuries.

    Golf

    Aaron Goldberg shot a 4-under-par 67 and earned medalist honors in the stroke play qualifying portion of the U.S. Amateur Public Links in Denver. He had a two-day total of 10-under 132. Benicia's Kyle Prolo (74-77-151) was the top local player but didn't advance to match play.

    Cycling

    Cuba's Pedro Pablo Perez, 31, who competed at the Sydney Olympics, was in a coma after a car crash and will miss the Beijing Games.

    Canoeing

    Hungary's Gyorgy Kolonics, a gold medalist at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, died after collapsing while training for the Beijing Games. He was 36.
